The camshaft controls the intake and exhaust valves of internal combustion engines in cars. It is driven by the engine’s crankshaft via the timing belt or timing chain.

The camshaft has its name from the hardened and ground cams that are mounted on the shaft of the TÜV Nord said in Hanover. The shaft rotates on its axis – the cams open the valves and push it or close it.
Depending on the type of engine it is a common camshaft for the valves, or there are two camshafts are used: one for intake and one for the exhaust valves. For four-stroke engines, the camshaft rotates at half the speed of the crankshaft, the TÜV.
